The Starbucks Coffee Company opened its first store in Seattle's Pike Place Public Market. At a time when canned supermarket coffee was the standard, selling fresh-roasted whole beans in a special store was a revolutionary concept. It began as an unusual place because it was the first of its kind. Today, it still has a unique reputation because it does things very differently from other coffee companies.

Extreme care is taken to buy the finest Arabica coffees available on the world markets - regardless of price - and label each variety accurately and honestly. Freshness and quality standards are legendary. Roasts that do not meet rigorous specifications, or beans that remain in their bins for more than a week are donated to charity. Each coffee is roasted to accentuate its individual flavour. Starbucks Roast is their darker, richer roast that brings out all the subtle flavours inherent in the world's best beans.

In Singapore, Starbucks was one of the first gourmet coffee houses to set up business, and now, has several outlets on the island. Located mostly in town areas such as Raffles City, Liat Towers, and Far East Plaza, Starbucks has branched out into other locales such as Holland Village, a very "in" place for food and dessert. Also in the plans are outlets in Orchard Parade Hotel, Eastpoint, and Orchard Building

Contrary to newspaper reports, I do not find Starbucks overly Americanized, with fake Yankee slang. Afterall, it is an American hangout. I would be rather appalled to find the staff speaking broken English. Aside from that, it is a very popular hangout for yuppies, moreso than the other coffee houses. What's good at Starbucks is their Cafe Latte, Infusia (tea), Frappuccinos, Espresso drinks, and latte cuppuccino, just to name a few. The brownies, blueberry scones, peach tortes and quiches are pretty good as well. Another interesting about Starbucks is theri wode range of coffee-related merchandize. You can get coffee tumblers in a variety of colourful designs and sizes; very nice coffee mugs; as well as coffee presses. It's definitely worth a second look!
