Coffee drinking is fast becoming a favourite pastime of Singaporeans, and with that comes the springing up of cafes and coffee houses all over Singapore. It is amazing the type of varieties of coffee one can find in the menus of these etablishments.

Since early times, the local coffeeshop has been present to serve the general population of Singapore. Men and women from all walks of life would go to these coffeeshops for their meals and have their cup of coffee in preparation for a gruelling day ahead. They did not really have the time to enjoy their coffee. Now coffee drinking has taken on a whole new meaning. In fact, some say that coffee is something that has to be savoured, like life.

Some people need coffee to prepare themselves for the challenges of the day ahead; they drink coffee as if it is a magic potion that gives them super human strength to fight the Roman Legionaries. Then, there are those who need their daily dose to get themselves out of bed and out of the house. They drink their coffee with their eyes half-closed, hoping that the coffee will take its effect and give them the energy to work.

The next two categories are ones that we see increasingly in Singapore. The first is people who drink coffee over a table, conversing with friends about everything. These people would sit in a café or coffee house for a time ranging from fifteen minutes to many hours on end just talking and talking (or one can say, exchanging ideas). Such are the people who want to share their lives with others and hope that others will be able to taste life as they have tasted it.

The other group of people are those who love drinking their coffee in solitude. They would sit in a coffee place sipping their coffee, observing their background and watching the world go by. These are the people who want to live life, searching for the truth. Often, you will see them sitting quietly in a corner, unobstrusively observing people and the environment.

Walk into a Coffee House these days and you will find people from all walks of life. Depending on the café you go to, you will find that there are at least 3 basic types of coffee: coffee as is, expresso and cappuccino. In some places, you can find up to 20 types of coffee, each with its distinctive taste and mood. Coffee is no longer just a drink; it has its own culture and personality. Everywhere you go, there is no escaping the smell of coffee; be it instant or brewed, caffinated or decaffeinated, strong or weak.
